Mark your calendars for April 9 – May 5, 2013 because theFox Cities Performing Arts Center’s most requested Broadway musical will be back at the Fox Cities P.A.C.!It’s been almost five years since Disney's The Lion King first delighted audiences inNortheast Wisconsin with its amazing stagecraft, and next spring 18 trucks willonce again roll into town with the makings of a show you’ll never forget.
To many, staging The Lion King seemed impossible. The epicconflict between lions worked beautifully in animated film – but onstage? ButWalt Disney Chairman Michael Eisner and Disney Theatrical Producers PeterSchneider and Thomas Schumacher believed in the power of The Lion King’s story. They turned to Julie Taymor, a director anddesigner well known for mythical staging inspired by international theatricalforms. Taymor was excited by the challenge.
“When I looked at the film… I said to myself, what isworking in this film for me? What’s the most daunting challenge? That’s what Ilike to do – the sheer fact that it’s very hard to do is a great challenge tome.”
The Lion King isunique in that we see how the magic works onstage. There’s no attempt to coverup the wheels and cogs that make it all happen. The human beings that controlthe puppets and wear the animal masks are fully seen. As an audience member at The Lion King, you have an importantjob: with your imagination, you are invited to mix the “animal” with the humaninto a magical whole. As Julie Taymor says, “When the human spirit visiblyanimates an object, we experience a special almost life-giving connection. Webecome engaged by both the method of storytelling as well as the story itself.”
